Paper grocery bags requested by Ritter

The Ritter Center, located at 16 Ritter St., San Rafael, is collecting paper grocery bags to distribute food to needy families. Chili chefs sought for cook-off

The Sausalito Parks and Recreation Department is seeking chili chefs for the annual cook-off. The 32nd annual Chili Cook-Off is set for Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Dunphy Park. Chefs are required to make at least 10 gallons of chili, and all the prep and cooking must be done on site. Prize categories include most creative, judge?s choice and people?s choice. Applications can be found on ci.sausalito.ca.us. For more information, call 289-4152.

Questionnaire mailed to some residents

Sausalito?s housing element committee has mailed a survey questionnaire to property owners in two-family and multi-family zoning districts to get more information about small living units that are ancillary to the main residence (accessory dwelling units). Survey responses will be anonymous. The deadline to return a survey is Sept. 10. Next Why There Are Words

The next Why There Are Words literary reading series is set for Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., at Studio 333 (333 Caledonia St.) in Sausalito The theme of this month?s gathering is ?Body Language? and it costs $5. Published authors will read their work, including Elaine Beale, author of ?Another Life Altogether?; Katie Crouch, author of ?Men and Dogs? and the New York Times best-seller ?Girls in Trucks?; Rachel Howard, author of a memoir about her father?s unsolved murder, ?The Lost Night?; Junse Kim, the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Faulkner Society Short Story Award and the Philip Roth Residence in Creative Writing at Bucknell University; Elizabeth Rosner, whose first novel, ?The Speed of Light,? won several literary prizes in both the U.S. and Europe, and was translated into nine foreign languages; and K.M. Child care commission vacancies

There are vacancies on the Marin County Child Care Commission, which is responsible for setting local priorities for child care funding and for overall child care planning and advocacy. The commission also serves as the state-mandated Local Child Care Planning Council. Bay Area Discovery Museum?s new café opens

The Bay Area Discovery Museum recently announced that noted restaurateur and consultant Frank Klein of FK Restaurants & Hospitality has teamed with culinary director and partner chef Chad Newton to take over food service operations at the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Café Discovery opened Aug. 24 with a menu of fresh salads, sandwiches, burgers and plenty of options for kids and their parents alike. The café will serve local foods, primarily from organic and sustainable purveyors. Snacks will be healthful as well. No high fructose corn syrup, processed sugars, white flour, excessive sodium or trans fat will be tolerated. Café Discovery will take pride in offering healthful snacks kids like to eat. Vegan soups will be offered, as well as homemade hummus and other handcrafted items like Newton?s own almond butter and mixed berry jam.

Russell Coutts to speak at Leukemia Cup dinner

The San Francisco Leukemia Cup committee has announced that Russell Coutts, four-time America?s Cup winner, will be the VIP dinner guest speaker at the San Francisco Yacht Club?s fifth annual Leukemia Cup Regatta on Oct. 2. The San Francisco Yacht Club is located at 98 Beach Road, Belvedere. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society?s Leukemia Cup Regatta Weekend begins with a reception and dinner on Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. The racing will begin on Sun., Oct. 3, at noon. The regatta will raise funds for blood cancer research and patient services. The fee is $100 per race boat, $75 per cruising class boat. Tickets on sale for comedy for kids

Jenny McCarthy and other comedians will perform at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on Sat., Sept. 11, in a benefit for Generation Rescue and the Tiburon-based Ryder Foundation, which funds organizations that research the environmental causes of autism and works to treat autistic youth.
